Sweeney's recent box office struggles began with the release of 'Anyone But You', which made a shocking $220 million at the box office in late 2023. However, since then, she's had a string of misfires, including 'Madame Web' and 'Americana', which made just $500,000 in its debut. 'Christy' joins this unfortunate list, but Sweeney is putting a positive spin on the situation, emphasizing the film's impact and the importance of the story it tells.
Christy Martin's story is indeed harrowing, as she endured unimaginable abuse at the hands of her ex-husband, Jim Martin, who eventually shot and stabbed her. Despite the abuse, Martin became a trailblazer in women's boxing. The film's failure is not entirely Sweeney's fault, but it's still a disappointment.
